Why Are Spark Plugs Important?
A spark plug creates the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside a gasoline engine. Although small in size, the correct spark plug plays an important role in reliable starting, stable combustion and smooth engine operation.
Spark plugs should never be selected by physical size or appearance alone. Thread diameter and reach, heat range, electrode design and spark gap are among the specifications that must be correct for the engine.
For this reason, the correct NGK reference and specification should always be matched to the particular engine.
Nickel, Platinum, Iridium and Ruthenium – What Is the Difference?
NGK uses different electrode designs and materials across its spark plug ranges, depending on the intended engine and performance requirements.
Conventional spark plugs are designed to perform according to their specified application, while precious metals such as platinum and iridium allow the use of fine electrodes with strong resistance to heat and electrode wear, helping maintain consistent ignition performance over their intended service life.
NGK also uses ruthenium technology in selected spark plug ranges.
However, a more advanced electrode material does not automatically make a spark plug suitable for every engine. Correct engine specification always comes before the choice of electrode material.
When Should Spark Plugs Be Inspected?
Hard starting, misfiring, rough engine operation, poor response or increased fuel consumption can be reasons to inspect the spark plugs.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that the spark plugs are faulty, as similar problems can originate elsewhere in the ignition, fuel or engine systems.
The condition of a removed spark plug can also provide useful diagnostic information. Electrode wear, deposits and the appearance of the firing end can help an experienced technician assess combustion conditions and identify possible engine-related issues.
Installation Matters
Using the correct spark plug is only part of the job. Proper installation is equally important.
Over-tightening or insufficient tightening can cause problems, so the spark plug should be installed using the correct tightening specification for the plug and engine, following the vehicle manufacturer's service requirements.
The spark gap should also not be altered without checking the required specification, particularly with fine-electrode spark plugs.
