What Matters in a Brake Disc?

Brake disc construction varies according to the vehicle. A solid disc has a solid rotor section, while a vented disc contains internal passages that help dissipate heat.

Solid and vented discs are not alternatives to be chosen by preference. The correct design and dimensions must match the specifications of the vehicle's braking system.

Similar Appearance Does Not Mean the Same Disc

Two brake discs can look almost identical while differing in important dimensions such as diameter, thickness, overall height, center bore and mounting holes.

Specifications may also vary within the same vehicle model depending on production year and braking system configuration. Correct matching is therefore essential, rather than relying on appearance or vehicle model name alone.

When Should Brake Discs Be Inspected?

Vibration or pulsation while braking, visible scoring, or uneven wear are all reasons to inspect the brake discs.

It is also good practice to inspect the discs when replacing brake pads. Installing new pads against a worn or uneven disc can affect the contact between the two surfaces and may influence braking performance.

Visual inspection alone is not always sufficient. Disc thickness should also be checked to ensure it remains above the specified minimum thickness.

Clean New Brake Discs Before Installation

This simple step should not be overlooked.

Before installation, both friction surfaces of a new brake disc should be thoroughly cleaned with a suitable brake cleaner to remove any traces of oil, grease or protective residue left from storage and transportation.

Care should also be taken to keep oil and grease away from the friction surface of the brake pads during installation.

Contamination of these surfaces can interfere with proper friction and may contribute to brake noise or squeal after installation.
